darker beings. When it was over, he slept at her side like a cowering dog, fearing an expression of her displeasure.
In the waning hours of the day, she awakened him. "You must go now."
Frazier dressed in the darkness.
The once crackling fire had been reduced to a few smoldering, near lifeless embers of faded orange.
"When will I see you again?" he asked.
She touched her fingers to his lips. "We have a destiny, Captain Frazier . . . remember?"
Without knowing how, he found himself back out in the cold, standing beside the old Buick. To his amazement, the lumbering vehicle had been turned around and was headed back down the village's single street. The snow had stopped and a cold, empty moon flooded the landscape with an eerie yellow-gray light. In the distance he could hear the relentless waves of the north Atlantic crashing against the icebound shore of the nearby coastline.
Slowly a smile encompassed Charlie Frazier's handsome face as he crawled into his car. He put the key in the ignition and the frigid metal beast roared to life without hesitation. As he put it in gear, he realized how good he felt. He turned on the lights, glanced
